各位讀者,你道這卡文迪許何許人也?他可算得上科學史上的一個怪人。他出身貴族,很有錢,但是一不做官,二不經商,三不交際。他把錢都用來買科學儀器和圖書,他還蓋了一個很像樣子的私人圖書館,任何人都可以來借書,但是一定要按時歸還,就是他自己看書也要先打個借條,辦個手續。他的穿戴全是上個世紀的打扮,所以一出門就有許多小孩子跟在後面,又叫又笑。他一輩子沒有結婚,不知缺根什麼神經,從心裏厭惡女人,家裏用看女僕,但又規定不許與他見面。每天早晨,他將吩咐女僕辦的事寫在紙上,放在固定地方。吃飯時女僕先擺好飯菜退出餐廳,他再進來落坐。他離開後,才許女僕進來收拾碗筷。一天,他在樓梯上與女僕偶然相遇,一時竟氣得發抖,返身找到管家,命令再造一個樓梯,男女各行其便。他思維怪異,一生發現甚多,比如:第一個從水中電解出氫、氧,並測出比例;第一個測出地球的密度等等。但是他又極少公開發表,寧肯讓這許多成果掩藏在塵封土埋的筆記本裏。直到他死後五十年,麥克斯韋受命籌建卡文迪許實驗室,才十分吃力地將這些"天書"一本本地整理發表。這件事,著實使那個極聰明的麥克斯韋晚年耗費了許多的精力。

無限猴子定理:讓一隻猴子在打字機上隨機地按鍵,當按鍵時間達到無窮時,幾乎必然能夠打出任何給定的文字,比如莎士比亞的全套著作。

在這裡,幾乎必然是一個有特定含義的數學術語,「猴子」也不是一隻真正意義上的猴子,它被用來比喻成一個可以產生無限隨機字母序列的抽象設備。這個理論說明把一個很大但有限的數看成無限的推論是錯誤的。猴子精確地通過鍵盤敲打出一部完整的作品比如說莎士比亞的哈姆雷特,在宇宙的生命周期中發生的機率也是極其低的,但並不是零。

乾冰是二氧化碳的凝結固態‧由於乾冰的溫度非常低,相當於攝氏的負78.5度,因此在保持物體維持冷凍或低溫狀態下非常有用 .乾冰能夠急速的冷凍物體和降低溫度並且可以用隔離手套來做配置,現在乾冰已經被廣泛的使用在許多層面了.乾冰在溶解時是由固態直接昇華為氣態,直接轉化為氣體而省略掉轉為液態的程序,因此其融化並不會產生任何水或液體,也因此我們稱它做 ”乾冰“

一般而言,一塊完整的乾冰在24小時之內因為昇華的關係會消耗大約5~10磅,而這昇華所造成的損耗也同樣的在顧客買回去過程中發生,因此,最好在要使用乾冰之前再購買,也就是盡量縮短購買乾冰和真正使用乾冰這期間的時間; 另外,切成小塊的乾冰會比一整塊的乾冰容易昇華,如非必要盡量不要把乾冰切成零碎或小顆粒狀。

乾冰最好不要裸露放在冰箱的冷凍庫,因為如果將乾冰放在冷凍庫的話冰箱的溫度調節器將被關掉,因為冰箱會誤以為溫度太低,這將折損冰箱的壽命,當然如果是在停電或冰箱壞掉的情況下乾冰絕對會讓冷凍庫或冰箱維持在良好的低溫之下的。

在商業運輸上,業者都使用乾冰來避免易腐化的商品腐敗而取代普通的水冰,因為乾冰是水冰重量的一半但冷凍的能量卻是水冰的三倍。也可將乾冰和水冰混合著使用來減少因為全部使用水冰的重量,以乾冰來保持水冰的冷卻持久度。

安全操作的乾冰

小心:
1.切勿讓小朋友單獨接觸乾冰!
2.乾冰非食品,請勿食用!!!

處理

切記在每次接觸乾冰的時候,一定要小心並且用手套或其他遮蔽物才能觸碰乾冰!如果是在長久直接碰觸肌膚的情況下,就可能會造成細胞冷凍而類似輕微或極度嚴重燙傷的傷害。

儲藏

將乾冰置於一個保溫箱(例如保利龍).越厚的保溫箱,會使它昇華地慢一點,但切記勿將乾冰儲存於一個密不透氣的容器,這會因乾冰昇華產生壓力甚至可能引起爆炸!另外,在處理乾冰時要記得保持使用人員所在位置是否通風,使用人員千萬不要與乾冰同時置於密閉的房間、汽車、船艙...等地。因為昇華的二氧化碳將替代氧氣而可能引起呼吸急促甚至窒息!
