Richard Erdoes (1912-2008) edited the book. Born in Austria and author of over 21 books, Erdoes was a longtime friend of Brave Bird and also helped her publish her other memoir, Ohitika Woman

Not just at Wounded Knee. There were massacres all over. Those are just 2 of many. My great great aunt was killed in a raid. She was pregnant and a soldier cut open her stomach, removed the fetus, cut her womb out and wore it on his head like a hat.

艾德華諾頓從小聽家人說自己與寶嘉康蒂有血緣關係，但從未獲得證實，因此諾頓只覺得那是家族傳說而已。

不過近日一檔探索名人祖先的節目《尋根》，確認了寶嘉康蒂的確是艾德華諾頓的第12代曾祖母，主持人歷史學家蓋茲（Henry Louis Gates Jr）查到相關書面記錄，寶嘉康蒂1614年4月5日在維吉尼亞州結婚，是莎士比亞活躍的年代，3年後寶嘉康蒂於英國逝世，其丈夫羅爾夫（John Rolfe）則於1622年逝世。

除此之外，節目還查到了諾頓的第三代曾祖父曾是奴隸主，奴役一個家庭，分別為55歲男子、一名37歲女子還有5名4到10歲的女孩。諾頓表示，知道祖先曾是奴隸主讓他感覺不太舒服，甚至還有8歲幼童，讓他「想死」，這不只是對他祖先的評判，而是對整個國家歷史的評判。不過知道寶嘉康蒂是他的祖先，諾頓則說，這讓他感到非常震驚，意識到自己只是整個人類歷史的小碎片。
