[Nineties Violet 🔮] A look at Japanese heavy metal band Dir En Grey 🗝️

Formed in 1997, Dir En Grey began as a visual kei band (leaning significantly on dramatic stage outfits and makeup), and are considered a front runner in the Japanese metal scene of the late 90s.

Discussing the bands eclectic style, music critic Thom Jurek said “The band’s sound has embraced tendencies of American metal and nu metal (they participated in Korn’s Family Values tour in America), and Dir En Grey bring so many other sonic and musical elements into the mix that they extend not only the reach of their own music, but the boundaries of any music they happen to incorporate into their sound.”

[Nineties Violet 🔮]  The M in M.I.A. stands for Mother (it doesn’t actually but it should)

M.I.A. (born Mathangi Arulpragasam) absolutely led the musical way in the 2000s with her combination of electronic, hip hop and traditional music.

One of the first artists to really emerge through the internet, her career found its footing in 2004 with her singles ‘Galang’ and ‘Sunshowers’.

Tapping into social and political themes in her work, she has frequently utilised her career as a vocal advocate for refugees, discussing the ‘homelessness, uprootedness’ of her own childhood and how that impacted and inspired her.

其實也可以被理解成：
～ You’re why I’m staying / 你就是我留下的原因

這樣子的「文字遊戲」在英文中稱為 homophones (同音異義字)，也是 Lana 最常在跟他的歌詞中使用的手法。像是經典的《Ultraviolence》當中的 violins (小提琴聲) 和 violence (暴力)；或是 《White Dress》 當中的 white Dress (白色洋裝) 和 waitress (女服務生)等等！

這樣的用法乍聽之下充滿畫面感和意象，實際上卻又是充滿情感又緊扣著歌曲核心，也讓歌詞不會過度直白以至於俗氣。而你們還知道哪些案例呢？
