We are closing our live coverage of the New Orleans attack that killed at least 15 people on New Year’s Day. Here is a recap of the day’s developments:

* The FBI said Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a 42-year-old US citizen from Texas, drove a Ford pickup truck into a crowd of revelers on New Orleans’ famous Bourbon Street at about 3.15am.

* At least 15 people were killed and more than 30 injured. The victims include Nikyra Cheyenne Dedeaux, an 18-year-old who was due to start a nursing program, and Tiger Bech, a 27-year-old Louisiana native and former football player.

* Jabbar served in the US army for 13 years, including a deployment to Afghanistan.

* He was shot dead by police after reportedly exchanging gunfire with police.

* Street barriers to prevent vehicle attacks in New Orleans in the area were in the process of being replaced at the time of the attack.

* Joe Biden said the FBI found that “mere hours before the attack”, the suspect “posted videos on social media indicating that he was inspired by Islamic State, expressing a desire to kill”.

* The FBI has said it did not believe Jabbar was “solely responsible” for the deadly attack and asked the public for help in tracking down associates.

* Donald Trump falsely suggested the suspect was a non-citizen, saying “criminals coming in are far worse than the criminals we have in our country”, despite the fact that the suspect was a US citizen.

* Residents and tourists recalled scrambling for cover as scenes of unimaginable horror unfolded in New Orleans’ French Quarter.

* Louisiana attorney general Liz Murrill said there is a huge law enforcement presence in New Orleans in the attack’s aftermath. She believes the Sugar Bowl should be delayed at least another day, but says the community is safe.

Evening summary

Thank you for following along with our breaking news blog. Here are some of the developments from the investigations into the deadly attacks in Las Vegas and New Orleans.

* US president Joe Biden said that law enforcement agencies were probing any possible links between the attack and the explosion later on Wednesday of a Tesla Cybertruck outside a hotel owned by US president-elect Donald Trump in Las Vegas that killed one person, though he cautioned that none had been found so far.

* US president-elect Donald Trump has criticised US authorities and law enforcement agencies in a post today. Although the message does not directly address the New Orleans attack, Trump wrote on his Truth Social network that the “The DOJ, FBI, and Democrat state and local prosecutors have not done their job”.

* Shamsud-Din Jabbar, the 42-year-old US citizen from Texas identified by the FBI as the New Orleans attacker, previously pleaded guilty to two charges, including driving under the influence in 2015, reports CNN.

* New York has heightened security and increased police presence at locations, including Trump Tower and Times Square, its mayor said.

* During a press conference, Joe Biden reiterated FBI officials’ assertion that the suspect identified in the New Orleans attack appeared to have acted alone, and said that there was no obvious connection between the New Orleans attack and the Las Vegas Tesla Cybertruck explosion.

* Authorities in Las Vegas just released new details on the Tesla Cybertruck explosion including the route the suspected bomber took from Colorado to Las Vegas, the materials used to make the bomb and whether there is a connection to the New Orleans attack.

Justin Trudeau has said he will step down as Canada’s prime minister after his party has finds a new leader, a decision that in effect brings an end to nearly a decade in power.

Here’s a recap of today’s developments:

* Trudeau said he will stay on as prime minister until a new leader of the ruling Liberal party is chosen through a “robust, nationwide” process.

* Trudeau said Canadians “deserve a clear choice in the next election”, adding that party infighting had made it impossible for him to face off against his political rivals.

* Parliament had been due to resume on 27 January and opposition parties had vowed to bring down the government as soon as they could. Trudeau has announced that parliament will be now prorogued until 24 March.

* The Liberal party president, Sachit Mehra, said he will convene a meeting of the National Board this week to select a new leader of the party.

* Trudeau’s announcement throws open the doors to a fierce political battle to be Canada’s next leader. Polls show the Liberals losing badly to the opposition Conservatives in an election that must be held by late October.

* Potential successors to Trudeau as the Liberal leader responded to his resignation. Mark Carney, previously head of both the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, thanked Trudeau for his leadership. Christy Clark, a former premier of British Columbia, also thanked him for his service.

* Pierre Poilievre, leader of the official opposition Conservative party, said “nothing has changed” following the announcement. In his resignation speech, Trudeau warned that Poilievre’s vision for Canada “is not the right one for Canadians.”

* Other Canadian opposition party leaders also responded to the news. Jagmeet Singh, leader of the New Democratic party, said the Liberals “do not deserve another chance, no matter who is the leader.” Yves-François Blanche, leader of the Bloc Quebecois, called for a general election to be held as soon as possible.

* US president-elect Donald Trump suggested Canada should become America’s “51st state”, writing on Truth Social that if Canada merged with the US that taxes would decrease and that there would be no tariffs. Canadian officials increasingly fear US tariffs will devastate the Canadian economy and a prorogued parliament is unlikely to ease these fears.

加拿大總理杜魯道於台灣時間六日晚間宣布辭去自由黨黨魁與總理職務，但表示會繼續擔任總理，直到黨內選出繼任者為止。現年五十三歲的杜魯道自二○一五年十一月開始掌權，到了去年底，因為國內經濟持續萎靡不振，以及政治醜聞不斷，支持率下滑至三十三% 的新低，進而遭受黨內批評聲浪不斷，以及各界壓力極大的情況下，不得不做出痛苦的決定。

如同近年來全球遭受通膨之苦，杜魯道政府創下民生物資通膨新高點，主要城市如溫哥華、多倫多、蒙特婁等地區房市上漲三十%｜四十%，讓加國人民苦不堪言。筆者的加拿大客戶若干年前就曾經在每日往來的電子郵件訴苦，汽油價格漲得是「沒天沒良」，真不知如何是好。至於醜聞風暴，杜魯道遭多次爆料，接受企業好友豪華招待旅遊；他的家人則被披露從慈善機構WE Charity獲得數十萬美元的「報酬」，該慈善機構曾經與杜魯道政府簽訂肥約。換言之，就是暗示「後謝」，嚴重損害杜魯道的聲譽。

反觀台灣，民生消費物資的通膨率控制得還算不錯，不像加拿大和美國，民怨搞到總理和總統要換人。至於房市，這相當耐人尋味，位於大溫哥華地區的國外客戶十五年前就曾經告訴筆者，當地房產價格被中國移民炒到恨天高。如今回想，幸虧我國政府一再管制，沒讓中資與中企「赤化」台灣房地產，否則後果如同加拿大，不堪設想。

杜魯道下台，許多外媒沒錯過即將於一月二十日上台的美國準總統川普，還利用川普威脅對加拿大徵收二十五%的關稅，以及嘲笑特魯道是「偉大的加拿大州」的「州長」（意指為美國的一州），而非加國總理，當成是壓垮駱駝的最後一根稻草，因為杜魯道連外交折衝都失了戰線。

目前加拿大是全球第一大經濟體美國的次大貿易夥伴，竟然發生通膨嚴重，物價指數飆漲，讓民眾對政府失去信心。對美貿易排行第八的台灣，必須引以為鑒，除了加強對美關係，經濟穩定與政治清廉，絕對是贏得人民信任的兩大法寶。

- While 100% agree with your sentiments I’d have to disagree about the usefulness of AI. Appropriate AI use is vital in some areas of research, analysing and sorting massive data sets and running multifaceted simulations, which are helping with real world issues such as climate change and antibiotic resistance. AI can do in 8 minutes what it would take 8 hours for a human. This leaves valuable time for a human to actually interpret the data. What we need to do is redistribute wealth and power so that we can utilise our resources effectively and efficiently.

加州野火肆虐，近期一對猶太裔知名慈善家、農業大亨夫婦遭外界批評「控制加州90%水資源」導致消防救援受阻，然而美國《財星》雜誌對此就報導稱，證實這是「反猶太主義」假訊息，這對夫婦實際掌握的水資源僅占加州1%。

洛杉磯大火依舊延燒之際，瑞斯尼克夫婦（Stewart and Lynda Resnick）在社群媒體上也正處於炎上狀態。這對來自烏克蘭的猶太裔移民夫婦，擁有龐大的農業集團，旗下多家公司，包含全美最大的食品公司「精彩公司」（Wonderful Company）、POM Wonderful果汁、FIJI Water礦泉水等品牌。

爭議一開始聚焦於這對總身家1260億美元夫婦經營的農業公司主要負責杏仁、開心果和石榴等亟需水分的作物，並稱其每年用水量高達1500億加侖（約5678億公升），同時指責瑞斯尼克夫婦持有克恩水庫（Kern Water Bank）57%股份，在水庫私有化後被懷疑將公共資源用於自家農業集團，加劇乾旱期間的用水限制。

不過對此，美國權威雜誌《財星》（Fortune）雜誌報導指出，這對夫妻確實經營一間規模龐大的農作物企業，也在洛杉磯以北2小時車程處擁有儲水設施，但許多來自社群媒體的指責全然不實，並稱這些假消息的本質實際上是「反猶太主義散播的陰謀」。

加州公共政策研究所（Public Policy Institute of California）水資源經濟學家兼研究員富蘭克林（Brad Franklin）就稱，這些大量指責像是「刻意挑選你不喜歡的人來批評他們」，他提到該公司確實是聖華金郡的主要用水者，但把洛杉磯野火的主因歸咎於他們的說法「相當愚蠢」。

兩人最受爭議的「控制加州九成水資源」部分，此前外界多引述洛杉磯水電管理部門數據，稱2021-2022會計年度約供應1630億加侖的水，「這表示瑞斯尼克夫婦所屬農業集團的用水量，約占洛杉磯總供水量的92%」，而《富比士》2021年也曾報導，精彩公司每年用水量約1500億加侖，但《財星》報導指出該公司2022、2023年的用水量與之前相當，約佔全加州水資源總量的1%。

報導也引述加州大學戴維斯分校（U.C. Davis）水資源科學中心副主任隆德（Jay Lund）的說法，指出這次洛杉磯野火規模龐大，消防棘手的主因並非「水量不夠」而是「水壓不足」，導致水資源無法送到該到達的地方，尤其洛杉磯消防系統原先設計是針對數間起火建築所需，在這次加州各處起火需要大量用水之際，消防用水系統量能窘迫，導致嚴重水壓降低。

隆德表示，洛杉磯市地下蓄水池的水量就足以救火，這些農業公司所儲的水也不會用於救洛杉磯的野火，因為該公司水庫距離洛杉磯約240公里，中間甚至有山阻隔。

《洛杉磯時報》也在報導提到，洛杉磯部分地區，尤其是太平洋帕利塞茲社區，是受到「水壓不足、消防栓乾涸」的影響，導致消防隊員難以撲滅周圍的火災。

針對指控，這對夫婦發表公開聲明予以澄清。他們表示，公司所有的水資源使用均符合州政府規範，並強調已經投入大量資金開發高效灌溉技術，以減少用水量。他們還指出，消防用水的來源與農業灌溉系統分屬不同供應渠道，兩者並未直接競爭，他們也引用加州水資源管理局的報告，證實消防用水早有專項預留，且受到嚴格保護。
