甲骨文裡面有一個字直接表示「吃」的形象，這個字就是「即」字。「即」字的甲骨文是，左邊表示豆內盛滿食物，右邊是一個人跪在食物的旁邊，表示「要吃東西」，或「在吃東西」。 《說文》說：「即，即食也。」「即食」就是「就食」，就是「吃」。因此「即」的本義是「吃」，後來「即」字用做虛詞，如即刻、即將、即使等，「即」字的本義「吃」就被遺忘了。但在先秦文獻還有用它本義的例證。《易•鼎》：「鼎有實，我仇有疾，不我能即。」這裡的「即」就是「就食（吃）」，用它的本義。

台語「偷吃步」（t‘au-tsiaʔ⊦-pɔ⊦）的用字，「偷」和「步」是本字，「吃」則應該用「食」或「即」，「食」和「即」才是台語吃義 tsiaʔ⊦ 的本字。
