Demineralization of Agricultural Residues by Water Leaching - Energy Sources - Volume 25, Issue 7
Agricultural residues (wheat straw, olive husk, sunflower stalk, rice straw, and tobacco stalk), especially wheat straw, may have high contents of chlorine and potassium, elements that are very undesirable in power plant fuels. Chlorine, which is found in certain biomass types, such as straw, may affect operation by corrosion. The high chlorine and alkali content of some biomass fuels raise concerns regarding corrosion. The aim of this study was to determine elemental concentrations of alkalis and chlorine in fresh biomass char and ash and their leaching behavior under a variety of leaching media. A pretreatment process to remove potassium from agricultural residues may be based on pyrolysis followed by char leaching. The residues are pyrolyzed at 798 K, at which point the potassium is retained in the char. Potassium and residual chlorine are leached from the residual char by water. Demineralization of the agricultural residue chars was investigated, and an average of 71, 72, and 98% of the K, Cl, and Na in chars were leached by washing with water at 355 K.

Energy recovery alternatives for the sustainable management of olive oil industry waste in Australia: life cycle assessment
Emissions were categorised into eight impact categories: ozone layer depletion potential (ODP), global warming potential (GWP100), eutrophication potential (EP), acidification potential (AP), human toxicity (HTP), fossil fuel depletion potential (FDP), ionising radiation potential (IRP), and photochemical oxidant formation potential (POFP). The study showed that although composting (current best practices – CBP) can achieve significant environmental benefits, using the olive waste to produce energy products may achieve better results, especially when displacing electricity from the main grid.

Biomass Gasification Plant and Syngas Clean-up System
Gasification is recognized as one of the most promising technologies to convert low quality fuels into more valuable ones. The principal problem related with the use of biomass in gasification processes is the high amount of tar released during the pyrolysis step. It is thus necessary to recover tar and to transform it in lighter combustible gas species such as CH4, CO and H2. In this work the experimental results of a medium industrial scale plant fed with olive husk and having a capacity of 250 kWt are presented. The gasifier is composed by a up-draft reactor which is followed by a secondary fixed bed reactor filled with alluminium oxide spheres having high porosity dedicated to the tar conversion reactions. The syngas is then used to feed an internal combustion engine with a production of 60 kWe.

The IPRP (Integrated Pyrolysis Regenerated Plant) technology: From concept to demonstration
The concept of integrated pyrolysis regenerated plant (IPRP) is based on a Gas Turbine (GT) fuelled by pyrogas produced in a rotary kiln slow pyrolysis reactor, where waste heat from GT is used to sustain the pyrolysis process. The IPRP plant provides a unique solution for microscale (below 250 kW) power plants, opening a new and competitive possibility for distributed biomass or wastes to energy conversion systems. The paper summarizes the state of art of the IPRP technology, from preliminary numerical simulation to pilot plant facility, including some new available data on pyrolysis gas from laboratory and pilot plants.

Thermogravimetric Stability Behavior of Less Common Lignocellulosic Fibers - a Review
A review on the thermogravimetric behavior of some less-common natural lignocellulosic fibers is presented. The review was limited to works analyzing results on the weight loss variation with temperature by means of the thermogravimetric (TG) curve and its derivative (DTG) for uncommon fibers such as curaua, rice, wheat straw, henequen, piassava, fique, date palm, buriti, artichoke, grass, okra, sponge gourd, caroa and olive husk. Relevant parameters obtained from corresponding TG/DTG curves were discussed to highlight distinctions and similarities in the thermal stability of these fibers. The concept of fiber thermal degradation is critically examined in view of the decomposition stages associated with the main constituents: water, hemicellulose, lignin and cellulose. The effect of fiber thermal degradation on possible application as polymer composite reinforced is remarked.
