What can the tar from biomass pyrolysis or gasification be used for? - ResearchGate

In gasification, tar is usually an undesired by-product as it results in the formation of coke, fouls downstream units and can deactivate catalysts.

In pyrolysis, tar can be the main product or it can be a by-product, depending on the temperature.

In fast pyrolysis processes where temperatures are usually in the range 400-600C, tar (sometimes called pyrolysis oil or bio-oil) can be upgraded to useful chemicals and fuels.

If the pyrolysis temperature is higher, then the process is more akin to indirect gasification with the tar being undesirable products.
