One VERY crucial detail was missing: US trucks are poorly made and designed.
They are 20 years behind the rest of the world. Driver comfort in EU trucks
is on another level, cabin noise is decimated. They maintenance cycles are
longer, they have cleaner emissions while using less moving parts to do it,
engines have more power, better fuel efficiency and they run cleaner because
they have better tolerances. There is no real magic in the engines: they are
just BETTER MADE! And US regulations do not allow those trucks to be used
because they are simpler in design. USA demands a certain way of doing things
that is archaic and make the engines run dirtier and provide less power and
wear out sooner.
Just looking at the frame alone, US truck industry install all the air lines
etc and then just sprays paint all over EVERYTHING. It is the cheapest way to
build it. It means unpainted surfaces are left behind, and all your
connectors are caked in paint. Doing it the hard way, painting it and then
installing everything is more expensive. Absolutely NO truck buyer accepts
that in Europe. In USA? They have no choice. You can not see that anywhere in
the world anymore, it is really something that belongs to the 80s. US semi
truck industry is fully insular, you can't import. This is what is going to
happen to every US industry with tariffs. They will stop innovating when
their entire market is just USA and they have captive audience: you don't
have a choice. So.. why would they put any money on research and development?
