TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The disqualification of a Taiwanese athlete at the Asian
Games competition has set off a furor on this island of 23 million people, with
 media outlets and thousands of citizens accusing China of foul play.

Yang's disqualification occurred at the tail end of her match against
Vietnamese competitor Thi Hau Vu, when judges ruled she was using an illegal
sensor on the heel of her shoes.

Yang had an insurmountable lead at the time, and was seen as a serious threat
to take gold. She broke down in tears when her disqualification was announced.

Games officials later upheld the decision against her, but the Taiwan
delegation protested, insisting the sensors were carefully checked and
approved before her match.

A post-match press conference deepened feelings of rancor, with Taiwanese and
Chinese journalists trading barbs, including one from a Chinese reporter
labeling the Taiwanese conduct as disgraceful.

Taiwanese perceptions of foul play in the Yang decision were fed by media
reports that Zhao Lei, an Asian Games official from China, was one of its
authors. The competition was eventually won by China's Wu Jingyu.

 "pigs."

Not all Taiwanese jumped on the anti-China bandwagon. Two pro-government
newspapers either downplayed the anti-China angle in their reporting or
ignored it completely.

In China, Taiwan Affairs Office Director Wang Yi said he hoped the controversy
 would not undermine bilateral ties.

Officials from taekwondo's world governing body stopped just short of
accusing a Taiwanese athlete of cheating, defending their decision to
disqualify her in what was the first major judging controversy at the 2010
Asian Games.

Yang Shu-chun's disqualification from her under-49 kilogram match has set off
a furor overnight in Taiwan, a self-ruled democratic island that mainland
China considers a renegade province.

Taiwanese media and online commentaries accused China of playing dirty tricks
to help their own competitor, Wu Jingyu, win the gold.

World Taekwondo Federation secretary general Yang Jin-suk deflected suggestions
of controversy at a hastily arranged news conference on Thursday. He said that
although Yang Shu-chun had passed a pre-fight inspection, a representative of
the equipment manufacturer spotted illegal palm-sized sensors attached to the
heels of her socks during the competition and alerted match officials

The sensors are used to indicate impact, and are used in scoring taekwondo.
 感應器是被用來偵測撞擊 因此可被用在偵測跆拳道得分上


"It's clearly manipulative behavior, intent of cheating, that's the reason why
 the individual was disqualified," Yang Jin-suk said. "Are we happy? No. It's
very sad to make that decision."

 這是一種操作比賽 意圖作弊的行為 所以我們判定他失格
 我們高興嘛? 當然不  做出這種決定是非常令人難過的

Yang Jin-suk was careful to point out he was not accusing the 25-year-old
Taiwanese of cheating, only that he was relaying facts of an initial
investigation. Officials have not yet interviewed the athlete or her coach,
and any possible longer-term punishment would not be issued until after the
Asian Games, he said.

Yang Shu-chun was leading 9-0 in the first round Wednesday when her bout was
stopped. She refused to leave the mat for a while and tearfully argued the
call. Her coach also pleaded with officials for an explanation.

Yang Jin-suk said there was no question of whether rules were breached.
The sensors were "taken away from the player's socks in the competition area.
How can we deny that?" he said.

The taekwondo official showed the sensors to reporters, explaining how they
are meant to be attached to either side of the sock's instep and had apparently
been trimmed to fit the felt-like fabric reinforcing the elastic on the back
of the sock.

"It is so obvious it is not designed to go on the heel," he said, saying the
manufacturer has never made a product with a sensor in that spot. "There would
be more uniformity, be very straight, this is not one that was made for the
heel."

When asked how inspectors could have missed the sensors in pre-match checks,
the taekwondo official said it was beside the point because they were a clear
violation of rules. But the patches could have easily been attached after the
check, he added.

"This is detachable," he said, holding up a sensor, made of black plastic
material and covered in gold dots. "It can be put on anytime, anywhere. It is
very small, it can be easily hidden."

Several questions remained unanswered. How could a seasoned athlete like Yang,
who was favored in the matchup against Thi Hau Vu of Vietnam, not be aware of
rules for taekwondo equipment? But if she was indeed trying to cheat, the
tactic seemed disingenuous since the sensors were attached to the outside of
the sock and could easily be spotted, as they eventually were.

Taiwan coach Liu Tsung-ta said the disqualification was difficult to accept,
especially because Yang Shu-chun had passed pre-fight inspections. He said
he had helped the 25-year-old put on a brand new pair of socks just before
the fight.

"We trained for more than a year, two years, working like dogs just for this
competition," he said. "We protested and the technical officials had a meeting
and said we were disqualified. We have no choice but to accept their decision."

Yang Shu-chun refused to answer reporters' questions at the taekwondo venue
on Thursday, where she appeared relaxed and was seen laughing with teammates
while sitting in the athletes' section.

 她看起來似乎放鬆許多 而且還跟隊友有說有笑

Liu said Yang was retiring from the sport, as she had originally planned to do
after the Asian Games, though he did not rule her competing again at the 2012
London Olympics for a rematch with Wu.
