Doc Saves Boy's Life With Household Drill

   11:03am UK, Wednesday May 20, 2009

A 12-year-old Australian boy is recovering after a local doctor
used a household drill to bore into his brain and relieve the
   pressure.

Nicholas has made a full recovery thanks to Dr Carson
The drama happened after Nicholas Rossi fell off his bike in the
town of Maryborough, Victoria, and was knocked unconscious.

"He was a bit delirious at first, but then he stood up and said he
was fine," his father, Michael Rossi, said.

When he got home, Nicholas kept complaining of a headache and his
mother, Karen, a trained nurse, took him to the district hospital.

Local GP Rob Carson, who was on duty, kept him for observation,
and an hour later Nicholas began to drift in and out of
   consciousness and have fits .

Dr Carson diagnosed internal bleeding in the skull - the same
condition that claimed the life of actress Natasha Richardson
   after a skiing accident.

   Natasha Richardson: Similar injury
Nicholas had fractured his skull and torn an artery between the
bone and the brain just above his ear.

The resulting bleeding led to the formation of a blood clot that
was putting huge pressure on his brain.

Dr Carson knew that he had to take immediate action or his young
   patient would die.

Mr Rossi recalled: "Dr Carson came over to us and said, 'I am
going to have to drill into (Nicholas) to relieve the pressure on
the brain - we've got one shot at this and one shot only'."

Dr Carson: 'All part of the job'
The small hospital did not have any neurological drills so Dr
Carson had to use a household drill from the maintenance room.

He telephoned leading Melbourne neurosurgeon David Wallace to talk
him through the procedure, which he had never performed before.

It was a success and an hour later Nichoas was airlifted to
Melbourne's Royal Children's Hospital, where he made a full
   recovery.

A modest Dr Carson said: "If you are in that situation you just do
   those things.

"It is not a personal achievement, it is just a part of the job
and I had a very good team of people helping me."
